Where We're Waking . The Retreat Kitchen
We're constantly on the lookout for new healthy eateries and love discovering local spots to indulge in a slow brunch or lunch with friends. It can be easy to fall into the habit of eating at the same 'tried and tested' restaurants each month, usually within a couple miles radius of home for convenience.
If you've had the chance to walk around Richmond on a sunny day, you'll know it's one of the most gorgeous areas in London; the quaint high street and sprawling greenery lends itself perfectly to enjoying a long weekend brunch followed by an amble along the river to the park.
We'd heard about The Retreat Kitchen from a friend last year and after seeing some delicious looking dishes online, decided it was finally time to pay the South West London cafe a visit. Tucked between Richmond station and river, The Retreat Kitchen has made a name for itself amongst residents for serving a wholesome selection of home-cooked vegan dishes.
The entirely vegan menu is considered and concise; alongside crowd-pleasing brunch favourites such as avocado on toast, owners Maggie and Claire have created some more unusual dishes such as a chickpea omelette and scrambled tofu with sautéed potato (above). Made using chickpea flour and filled with broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes and shallots, the omelette was unlike anything we'd tried before and was almost dosa-like in texture. To accompany this, we had the scrambled tofu with sautéed potato, spinach and chipotle chilli - all served on gluten-free bread. This is the sort of breakfast we could eat over and over: nourishing, delicious and flavour-packed.
It's not often that we say this BUT we also have The Retreat Kitchen to thank for introducing us to the best hot chocolate we've ever tasted. If you haven't heard of Mörk Chocolate, let us give you the lowdown. Made from a few simple, natural ingredients (cocoa powder, heavy blocks of pure unsweetened chocolate — 100% cacao liquor — and unrefined coconut blossom sugar) Mörk Chocolate is an artisan hot chocolate, intended to be enjoyed strong and sipped slowly. If you're planning a trip to Richmond, we'd highly recommend you head down to The Retreat Kitchen for a bite to eat or simply to enjoy the hot chocolate - we're already looking forward to our next visit.
