Where We're Waking . e5 Bakehouse

In the last 10 years, the areas surrounding London Field's in Hackney have morphed from East London suburb to foodie mecca. Broadway Market will forever hold a place in our hearts as being the ultimate Saturday hangout spot but it's the crop of independent eateries that make London Fields our go-to for delicious food and drink, all week round. Rawduck, Sardine, Pidgin, Lardo, Violet Cakes, Climpson's, Morty & Bobs, Mare Street Market... the list goes on.

One place that's been on our 'to visit' list since it expanded last year is e5 Bakehouse. Known across London for it's outrageously good organic sourdough bread, e5 Bakehouse can be found across three railway arches on Mentmore Terrace - just a stones throw from the park. Unless you know about e5 Bakehouse, it's not the sort of place you would stumble across but you'd be VERY happy if you did.

Freshly made bread, pastries and locally sourced products are available to enjoy from the on-site shop; the adjoining cafe serves up traditional brunch dishes such as eggs/avocado (Spanish and when in season) on toast and homemade granola and daily-changing lunch menu features delicious local, seasonal, and entirely organic ingredients. The fact that both the cafe and shop were heaving with customers during our early morning midweek visit is testament to e5's popularity.

After a quick guided tour around the bakehouse - including a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the bakery - our stomach's were rumbling for a slice of e5's famous sourdough. We opted for a quick breakfast of eggs on toast (£6) and pan con tomate (£5.50) - both served gloriously simply, without any needless garnishes. As you would expect, the bread is brilliantly fresh and there are jars of nut-butters and fruit preserves on the tables to enjoy with leftover crusts. If you're after a delicious, no frills breakfast with a proper cup of coffee - this is the place for you: the menu is concise, the food is super fresh and the atmosphere is relaxed.
