There are some fantastic foodie hotspots in and around the Clerkenwell area but for some reason, we always seem to end up back at The Modern Pantry in St. John's Square.
It could be because of the extensive menu, that often takes inspiration from both Middle Eastern cuisine and Asian flavours. It could also be because of the slick but unpretentious decor, a nice change from exposed walls and drafty communal dining areas that have become increasingly popular over the last few years. Either way, The Modern Pantry never fails to effortlessly serve a dish full of flavour - exactly what you want from a breakfast or brunch away from home.
On recent visits, the Sugar Cured Prawn Omelette and Miso, Green Chilli & Spring Onion Waffles have (almost) gone down quicker than Usain Bolt running the 100m. Hot drinks haven't been left in the corner either: from matcha lattes and house-blend coffee to the Liquorice & Chilli Hot Chocolate we weren't quite brave enough to try, there's something for every taste. The Modern Pantry is also one of the few places that serve coconut, soy and almond milk as dairy alternatives - great to keep in mind for anyone with intolerances and allergies.
We're already planning our next visit to try the Turkish Menemen and the Coconut Milk Rice Pudding (yes, they have dessert on the weekend brunch menu) but until then - we'll have to make do with Anna Hansen's cookbook of the same name.
