Few things beat the smell of fresh coffee in the morning; in the Summer we enjoys ours iced and in the Winter, it’s something to get out of bed for.

Given a choice, we prefer locally roasted, fresh coffee from independent café’s and roasters. Instant coffee is a cheap alternative, is easy to make and requires little storage space but is washed with chemicals such as acrylamide and refined in the production process.

There are some fantastic artisan coffee brands and shops worth keeping an eye out for next time you’re after a caffeine fix, and they don’t have to cost the earth. Whether you’d rather enjoy a latte in the comfort of your own home or a cappuccino out with friends, we’ve compiled a list below of some of our favourite places to indulge:

Climpson & Sons
67 Broadway Market, E8 4PH
Artisan coffee shop & roastery
Climpson’s set up shop on Broadway Market nearly 15 years ago and is an essential coffee stop for any discerning aficionado. Not only does the coffee taste amazing, it’s ethical too – they work closely with farmers from the origin to ensure producers receive a fair price.

Nestled halfway up Kingsland Road, Haggerston Espresso Room works closely with local roasteries to bring customers the best coffee experience. They recently launched their own range of cold-brew HER Coffee Concentrate for quick but tasty coffee when you’re in a hurry.

Round Hill Roastery
Independent speciality roastery
Round Hill source small crops from independent growers and work in line with seasonal harvests to ensure the freshest, most delicious brew. Based in South West England, Round Hill’s range of coffee is available to buy from their online shop.

Nude Espresso

Independent roastery & café
Nude source their lots directly from farmers as their crops come in to season meaning each roast is super fresh and totally unique.  Nude has two café’s (Brick Lane and Bell Lane) and is also available to enjoy from The Good Life Eatery, E5 Bakehouse and 10 Greek Street.

Independent roastery & cafe in several locations across London
Founded in Shoreditch, the Grind group now has various coffee-shops-come-bars across London. Although they do a mean Espresso Martini, coffee is still the main focus, with their house blend sourced and roasted in East London.

Independent roastery & café
11 Leonard Street, EC2A 4AQ
Popular with East London locals, the Ozone café serves excellent coffee alongside homemade baked goods for breakfast and lunch. Our favourite blend is the Brazilian-based Empire, served black.

Monmouth Coffee Company
Independent roastery & cafe in several locations across London
Whether you visit at 9am on a Monday or 9pm on a Sunday, Monmouth is always heaving; it’s a major player on the London coffee scene and continues to produce excellent coffee, served simply. Expect a queue and if you have time, take a moment to speak to the baristas – they have a wealth of coffee knowledge with years of experience under their belts.
