. GUIDE GONG BATH .

. As announced earlier this week, me and a few of my fellow start up friends have adopted an empty studio space in East London for the remaining two weeks of January. We want to create a calm, simple space, where people can come to join in with deeply meaningful and memorable workshops and events. January, as we all know, is one of the hardest months of the year, with cases of depression, stress and anxiety increasing more than in other months. We want to help calm said situations and sooth negative emotions by offering truly grounding events, using meditation and mindfulness to reduce symptoms and encourage positive mindsets and solutions.

Our first meditative event is a guided gong bath lead by sound healer and space clearer, Leo Cosendai. Before you picture yourself naked in a bath in a room full of baths with strangers, let me explain the concept in more detail. A Gong Bath is a form of sound therapy where a gong - or several gongs - are played therapeutically to bring healing to the mind and the body. You are bathed in sound waves which are unusual and new for the human brain to follow, which leads you to drift gently into a deep meditative state. Lying down on a mat with blankets and cushions for optimal comfort, the leader begins playing a gentle rhythm on the gongs, progressing into a higher tempo and volume throughout the session. The techniques used are changed frequently to ensure the brain doesn’t become comfortable or expectant of any rhythm. This allows for entrainment to take place and ensures the brain cannot follow any pattern, which would prevent it or complicate the process of it entering fully into a meditative state. Several brain wave states are experienced during the session, including alpha and theta. Alpha brain waves are present in states of relaxation, and daydreaming, imagination and associative thinking are all part of alpha brainwave activity. This is the first state we reach, which is followed by the theta state. Theta waves occur during sleep in which dreams take place - or REM sleep - as well as during deep meditation. Theta brainwave frequencies are most commonly where the gongs will take you. You will most likely enter a dreamlike, meditative state which is a good state of consciousness to be in for healing to occur. Most people will have their own experience which may be different to somebody else's, but generally the gong bath is very good at relieving pain, stress or dealing with personal issues, and it tends to bring people to a blissful state that can often last for many days.

You will get the chance to talk to the leader after the session to find out more about his techniques and how you felt or what you experienced during the session.

The session starts at 7pm, and will last for 90 minutes.
